Finding Your Matching Scent and Style

The scent we choose says a lot about us, just like our personal style. And sometimes we're in the mood to find a new scent, but one that compliments who we are. Fragrances are typically divided between floral, fresh/citrus, natural/earthy, heavy, and sweet. I've put together a short shopping guide of styles and they're matching scents, each one representing a different girl. Let me know what your favorite scent is in the comments below. Floral

Traditional floral notes always bring to mind classic style coupled with playfulness. A fun graphic midi wrap skirt paired with knee-high boots is classy and a twist on traditional style. Dahlia & Vines by Nest Fragrances has notes of daffodil, peony, rose, and garden vines—a literal bouquet of fragrance. Plus, I'm a sucker for packaging and this bottle is reeeeally calling my name (I must have it).

The fresh scent from a light fragrance with notes of citrus always remind me of clean lines—a girl who's into the minimalist style and has it nailed down pat. She always has this on point style and looks as if she spent the day taking street style pictures for her blog. See by Chloé Eau Fraîche is a classic fresh scent with notes of water hyacinth, apple blossom, and bright jasmine—clean and feminine but not too girly.

Not to be confused with the patchouli loving earth mother who owns that incense shop and vaguely reminds you of Professor Trelawny (too much detail?), this girl loves earthy scents. She's a free spirit, but is still style conscious and has a bit of a boho flair. White Woods by Clean has notes of Bergamot Leaves, Mandarin, Black Pepper, Vanilla Orchid and Sandalwood and evokes feelings of, and I quote: "a warm, luxurious scent that embodies the pure essence of natural light dancing along a quiet wooded path." Yeah...okay it's a little hippy dippy but the scent is lovely.

When I think of heavier, amber scents it reminds me of my grandma and Elizabeth Arden. It was her favorite scent and my mind immediately jumps to her whenever I come across it. It was dark and somewhat sweet and warm. I think of a cool/moody fashion girl who looks to Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen for style inspiration, hence my choice of Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black.

Oh the joy of Christmas shopping, it brings out the best in us...until we gotta elbow our way through the mall. And if you're like me, you spend a lot of time looking for the perfect gift for your friends/family/SO. For the Love of Chelsea

I love ankle boots. I’ve already confessed how many pairs I own, and the collection has grown since, so it’s no surprise. My recent obsession is the Chelsea boot, a comfortable cool ankle boot for everyday. The elastic panels making them easy to slip on and off only put them higher on my list of favorite shoes. I love a pointed toe and low heel in black leather, but of course any other color I come across finds a space in my heart. 4 Ways to Transform Your Sweaters

I will say it time and time again I love fall/winter because it means I can layer up and wear more clothes. Sweaters are my most favorite because—layers. The only problem is you don’t want to get swallowed by the clothes, you need to have some accents, i.e. accessories. Adding the small details can take a look to the next level and away from blah.

Below are a few layering/accessory combos to make you stand out from the sea of boring.

The Skirt Effect

I love the origami look of this dress. With a sweater layered over you’re left with a cool skirt. Add gold accessories, suede booties and crossbody bag and you’re set to conquer the day.

Layering with Paisley

For a 70s vibe (very popular on the runways) layer an oversized sweater over a floral blouse with secretary bow. Balance out the top with flare jeans that are fitted through the knee and add suede accessories to polish off the look.

Prints on Prints

A check print sweater with a large plaid printed poncho vest is an easy way to mix prints. It’s all about balance—simplified print with a large print, or small repeating print with simple large print. To balance your flowy top half, pull on a knit pencil skirt for effortless and casual chic. Get crazy with mixing colors in your accessories, because why not! (Hint: all the colors in this look are primary colors, making it easy for them to go together)

Graphic Sweater

A cool graphic sweater looks even cooler with a patterned scarf adding dimension and more color. Keep your look relaxed with distressed boyfriend jeans and some cool cut-out ankle boots. And don’t forget glossy lips!

Every season I start looking at coats and am so over the sea of black pea coats or black in general. I want something with style and color! I’m also finding I need a wool blend if I want to stay remotely warm in the Colorado winter. You Are NOBODY Without These 5 Shoes!

That's all I see every time I open my mailbox, blogs and fashion sites telling me I need certain essential items in my sartorial arsenal, otherwise I've failed as a fashion girl. Well, thanks for the tips but it's a bit bombarding and frankly, they all turn out to be the same thing. I've written blog posts about fall essentials because it's fun to pick favorites for the coming season, but I want something original from my favorite fashion sites....or at the very least different blog titles.

Below, I've picked looks and pieces that I'm currently loving and you can take it or leave it. I'm not going to make you feel bad if you don't have any of these looks in your wardrobe or care if you think I'm crazy for even picking these fashions. But here they are, my fall favorites.

Loafer Love

You can't go wrong with flats. Actually, I take that back, there's a lot that can go bad with flats. Blisters being the number one culprit, but I digress. This season I'm in love with loafers, they're comfy and classic and look really good with boyfriend jeans. Just effortless cool mixed with vintage class.

I've been saving up to buy this pair of Everlane loafers, and I can't wait any longer! I dream about them and it's totally not a problem!

70's Style

I've been on the hunt for a secretary bow blouse in just the right print, it's hard to find the right color combinations. Zara had an awesome fall collection with 70's inspired looks—so much velvet and paisley, mmmm. I think I like this style because it means high-waisted pants and bell bottoms, both of which are my friend since I have short legs and a long torso. Plus, you kind of feel like a rockstar, all you need are some platforms and you're set. For Fall RTW, Anna Sui hit all the right notes (and usually does when it comes to bohemian style) with her collection of viking/Nordic/Swedish inspiration. What I love about the 70's style revival is not the bohemian element but more the everyday fashionable girl from that era, you can keep your kimono's and beaded headbands thank you very much!

Bells and Flares and Whistles

I was a little hesitant about the return of flared jeans, but then I remembered they make your butt look awesome and elongate your legs. You can find cropped flared jeans, something I'm still trying to accept. I've seen many street style pics of people rocking them, but I don't know if I'm ready.

Currently, I'm looking for a high-waisted pair which I already spelled out my love for, above. They're a nice style to throw in the mix of boyfriend and skinny jeans, but let me be clear: I refuse to give up my skinnies! I don't care how many blogs say they're walking out the style door, they're the best kind of jeans I own—I live in them.

 Valentino Couture Fall 2015

All of it, I love all of it! This collection blew everyone out of the water who showed couture this season. It was dark, romantic and oh so Roman Italian. Every look had sex appeal and a softness of pleated tulle and sheer chiffon. Now, my wallet in no way can give me a couture gown, but I will be using the collection as inspiration for nighttime looks.

Mastering the Trend: Minimalist

My favorite trend for the past few seasons has been the minimalist or normcore look. I'm glad to find its managed to stick around for summer. I love the clean lines and simple color palettes, they really are still fresh and new for the summer. It also makes it slightly easier to get dressed in the morning; knowing I just need to balance something oversized like a white button down oxford with skinny pants. Maybe it's a sign I'm growing up and prefer simpler silhouettes as opposed to the festival look that never seems to go away. You can read my rant about it here. What I really love is it seems so fashion forward and almost a little European in the nordic IKEA sense. I imagine tall blondes who own art galleries and snack on salted fish love this look. I'll take it without the fish.

Below are some looks to help you find inspiration for the minimalist look this summer. The key is to find pieces in lightweight fabrics so you can still layer them. Also, the flatform sandal is your new friend, the most comfortable thing you'll wear this season.

I love the origami culottes, one of the biggest trends this season. Culottes are on my shopping list as well as a bucket bag like the one above. Wearing white on white is chic and easy, I added the pop of pink to break it up a bit.

I might be taking a few liberties with this look incorporating the gladiator sandals. They are very on trend for the summer and the simple look of this pair work well with the button down dress. A white structured cross-body adds a nice pop to the subdued color palette. 

Overalls are here for the summer! Pair them with a cut-out tank and some comfy but cool sneakers and you're ready to hit the streets. Backpacks are very popular for the minimalist look and their easy to carry - no more shoulder pain!

The minimalist look is pretty simple (minimal, if you will) and gives a fresh look to your summer wardrobe. I hope these looks lend some inspiration for your next shopping trip.
